THIOT INGENIERIE’s testing laboratory

Our company has its very own Shock Physics laboratory, the world’s first private establishment in this cutting-edge sector. We perform impact, material characterization and certification tests for our clients (in the defence, aeronautics, aerospace and civil engineering sectors, etc.) and we also participate in major research programmes. Our strengths? We provide a comprehensive service to cover your shock-physics requirements. We combine physical laboratory tests with our expertise in numerical simulation to help you gain a better understanding of your materials and optimize your products.

The tests that we conduct in the laboratory allow us to observe impact phenomena by the nanosecond and measure movements in the order of a micrometre. This is all made possible due to our state-of-the-art instrumentation, which allows us to study materials down to their very core during the short duration of an impact.

MATERIAL CHARACTERIZATION

Tests to determine the behaviour of your materials when subjected to high strain rates.

IMPACT TESTS

Impact tests to qualify your structures or certify your products,
from 10 m/s to 10.5 km/s.

NUMERICAL SIMULATION

Numerical tools to simulate and extrapolate the most complex fast dynamics phenomena.

HIGH-G ACCELERATION TESTING

To test embedded systems up to 100,000 G

What is shock physics?

Initially, Shock Physics was used in the second half of the 20th century to address the problem of armour perforation in the military industry. It fast became an essential discipline in the study of the behaviour of materials subjected to impacts, or high strain rates in general.

Shock Physics is involved, for example, in ensuring that aircraft and military vehicles are both safer and more lightweight and that satellites are better designed so as not to produce debris, and in developing more robust infrastructures to protect civilian populations in the face of the terrorist threat. The science now plays a central role in a great number of fields, wherever there is a risk of mechanical shock, crashes, impacts, collisions or explosions: aeronautics, aerospace, defence, civil engineering, automobile industry, etc.
